We’re Never Scared of a Scar

November 22nd, 2011

Question:  What is collagen induction therapy?  I cannot find much about it, can you tell me more?

Answer: Roll‑CIT, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a needling procedure where tiny needles traumatize the skin, causing a wound-healing response. The skin responds to these tiny wounds by creating collagen (hence the term collagen induction therapy.)  This procedure is typically recommended for patients who are requesting an improvement in the appearance of their skin, for aged skin, acne scarring, or post-traumatic scars.  It is a popular treatment in South Africa for patients with darker skin types for whom lasers may not be ideal due to risks of pigmentation.

If you are looking for help with removing a scar or scar reduction, dermabrasion, lasers and light therapy are efficient and effective options for many skin types. Lasers and light therapy can smooth and purify the skin. In addition to improving the appearance of scars, these in-office procedures reduce the appearance of age, reduce discolorations in the skin, and provide a modest tightening effect. Lasers and light therapy offer minimal down time and quick results.  Lasers can help minimize the appearance of scars and even improve the overall appearance of your skin. While there isn’t a guarantee that your scar can be removed entirely, our office has proven experience in significantly reducing the appearance of scars.  We, the providers at the Chicago Center for Facial Plastic Surgery, pride ourselves on our ability to treat all kinds of scars due to our access to an unusually wide range of treatment options: keloids and raised scars, depressed scars, acne scars, and surgical scars. We do not limit our scar reduction services to the face. We will treat body scars. We can treat all skin types.

Scars are often unique and treatment options will vary based on the type of scar and skin type. Contact our office to set a consultation to learn what options are best for you. (Tip: Ask about laser package pricing. Ideal for those who are interested in receiving more than one treatment, as often is the case in achieving optimal scar reduction results.)

A 1-on-1 Discussion

November 11th, 2011

Let’s talk. Do you occasionally get pulled to the side by inquisitive people who think something is frustrating you… when nothing is actually wrong? You may be suffering from a case of deep 11’s.  Elevens (medically known as glabellar lines) are the vertical lines located between your eyebrows. These deep lines are caused by repetitive motions we make with our facial muscles such as frowning or squinting.

You might be surprised to learn that Botox® was once used to help alleviate nervous twitching of the eyes.  In this same way, Botox® helps to improve the appearance of these lines by blocking nerves from making unnecessary contractions, relaxing the muscle to create a calmer, happier appearance. There have been over 11 million treatments with Botox® in the US since 2002.

Sleepy Hollows

October 31st, 2011

It’s dark outside. You’re on your way to bed. You look in the mirror, and there they are:  under eye circles that terrify you. Okay, so maybe it’s not Halloween 4, but this common sign of aging affects most Americans at some point. Whether they’re induced by genetics, age, or lack of sleep, 53% of women cite under eye circles and puffiness as their number one beauty concern according to a survey from Clinique.  We often look to concealer to temporarily solve the problem, but the cakey appearance of concealer is often too evident to provide the naturally youthful appearance that we seek.

In 2006, studies reported a dramatic increase in the cosmetics and skin care industry in spending on developing products to reduce under eye circles, from $588 million to $1.06 billion.  You may have seen a variety of products pop up on drugstore and grocery store shelves claiming to reduce under eye circles and puffiness, but the ubiquitous presence of these over-the-counter solutions reflects the unlikelihood that they are actually effective. Dark under eye circle are generally have three causes: 1. Dark pigmentation of the skin. 2. Prominent vasculature behind fair color translucent skin. 3. Shadowing and hollowing out behind the eyes that is  common with aging   In our office, the third cause is the most frequently seen and we have been able to effectively use fillers such as Restylane®  and or Radiesse to improve the appearance of under eye hollowing, creating more effective and long-lasting results than over-the-counter skincare products. The hyaluronic filler is naturally found in the skin to bond water molecules.  When injected under the skin, the filler helps counteract volume loss beneath eyes. For those with thin skin and prominent vasculature Radiesse which has an opaque color seems to work better because it not only fills in the hollow but also blends out the dark colors behind the eyes.  The essential to getting a good result though is to see an expert injector. To place filler under the eye takes enormous amount of skill and if it isn’t done well the dark circle can look much worse. It also is important to not use Juvederm under the eyes. Its extraordinary ability to attract water may be a benefit in other parts of the face but under the eyes it tends to cause puffiness and blue discolorations.  Of course, not every patient is a candidate for filler.  For those with dark skin pigmentation, we also recommend Auriderm, a topical vitamin K solution, or laser treatments to improve the appearance of any darkness or circles beneath the eyes

Ask Dr. Dayan: The Science of Beauty

October 25th, 2011

Question: Is beauty based on cultural preference or mathematical proportions?

Answer: It is interesting when patients and people asked me about the philosophical theories behind beauty. I teach a course at DePaul University on the Science of Beauty, and beauty can be a complex topic. I have written quite a few articles, and currently, I am in the process writing a book on this. Ultimately, beauty is based on your own self-esteem. The better you feel, the more attractively you will present yourself to others. There are some natural definitions of beauty that seem to be cross-cultural and consistent in time and history. Such factors as facial symmetry, the averageness of the face, certain ratios of the facial features and of body ratios, and scientific indicators of youthfulness all seemed to present signs of beauty across cultural boundaries. However, there are many things that we can do to mimic these beauty markers in order to make a face more attractive. A plastic surgeon possesses the skills, talent, and knowledge to make a face more attractive can execute this transformation. However, it does not have any benefit unless the person actually feels more beautiful. The goal is to fix what bothers you, and if done, you will alter the way you feel about yourself. If you feel better about yourself, then you may stand taller. You may have better expressions. You may take better care of yourself both physically and aesthetically, and therefore, you will present a more attractive front. This is the key to being more beautiful. For further reference on this, please contact my office. I am happy to refer to you multiple articles I have written on the topic.

Introducing Subliminal Difference

July 1st, 2011

Subliminal Difference is the latest in nonsurgical techniques, developed by Dr. Dayan. The technique focuses on natural results, uses blunt-tipped cannulas to minimize any pain or downtime, and incorporates the artistic eye and scientific understanding of the way beauty communicates in nature, as instructed by Dr. Dayan at Depaul University. In nature amongst all cultures, there are certain characteristics that all people identify as attractive. Attraction is what causes someone, often a member of the opposite sex, to engage with the subject. While the physical results of this process do make a difference, what makes us most attractive is confidence and self-assuredness.During the Subliminal Difference treatment, Dr. Dayan uses the latest nonsurgical advancements to immolate the many nuances of beauty that communicate health, fertility, and vitality. Most of all, these techniques have been developed to polish the confidence of patients who experience this transformation.

Did you know?

  • Symmetry is one of the primary natural indicators of beauty.
  • Plump lips signify fertility and high levels of estrogen in women.
  • While eyebrows that are close together may make one appear angry or unapproachable, arched brows that are more relaxed make one appear friendlier.
  • While everyone wants clear even skin, you may be surprised thata 2006 study published in the journal “Evolution and Human Behavior” proved that even skin tone is a clear predictor of who will be perceived as attractive.

Botox Brows?

June 30th, 2011

We’ve noticed that Halle Berry occasionally has very arched eyebrows, and they typically are very symmetrical. We all know that Halle Berry has flawless skin and no wrinkles, which could be heredity or Botox enhanced. However, many people don’t know that Botox can also elevate the brows and create a more symmetrical appearance. We call this a Temporal Brow Lift.

Botox will relax the muscle that causes brows to droop. To even brows that are asymmetrical, an expert injector with an artistic eye such as Dr.Dayan or our Injection Specialist Michelle can treat using varying units of Botox to create symmetry. Incorrect placement of product, not enough, or too much can cause an undesired effect. Don’t forget, along with Botox a brow shapeis corrected depending on the person’s existing brow growth and the shape of their eye and face.

Eyebrows frame the eyes, the most dominant facial feature, so their impact on our look is great. An elevated arch can make the eyes appear more inviting and youthful. To accompany a brow enhancement, consider eye brightening make up and highlighting techniques for the bone under the brow.

While there’s no way to tell if the beautiful celebrity occasionally receives help from an injection, we wouldn’t be surprised if she joined her peers Cindy Crawford and Kim Cattrall who publicly admit to enjoying the benefits of Botox.
