| The target of the laser beam is the melanin pigment within the hair follicle. Because the marked melanin is only readily available during a part of the hair growth cycle, this means that only a percentage of the hairs are in the vulnerable part of the cycle at any one time. As such, more than one treatment is typically needed in order to effectively reach all hairs in a given area. Melanin exists in the skin, more so in individuals who have recently tanned or those who have a darker skin color. With newer generation lasers, this skin melanin is safely bypassed, allowing for the safe and effective treatment of patients of all skin types.
Is the hair loss permanent?
According to some current research, the hair loss may be permanent in properly selected and treated patients. Because long-term studies are still pending, the FDA has limited companies to declaring that lasers can result in ‘permanent hair reduction’ until permanent hair loss can be scientifically proven.
With continued improvement of laser technology, it’s becoming more and more clear that the best option for permanent reduction is laser hair removal. A single laser hair removal treatment can take anywhere from several minutes to several hours depending upon the number and size of areas being treated. Anesthesia is typically not necessary, though topical anesthesia may be used for those who are very sensitive to pain.
