The goal of scar revision is to transform an unsightly obvious scar into a well-camouflaged thin line that blends in nicely to the normal contours and creases of the face. Scars may need to be treated differently depending on the nature of the scar. Hypertrophic and keloid scars may require treatment with laser, silicone sheeting or steroids. It is important to understand that following the revision your new scar will go through a period of maturation. It will initially be red but with time this new thin healing line should fade to your normal skin color. Certain innate characteristics of your skin may affect the way in which you heal and your ultimate result. Most scar revisions are done on an outpatient basis. Following surgery we usually cover the revised scar with skin color tape, which remains in place for one week.
Good candidates for scar revision include physically healthy men and women who have realistic expectations and are looking to improve the appearance of a scar by disguising it, minimizing its prominence or relocating it. Several techniques and procedures may be used for scar revision and the procedure that is right for you will depend upon your particular scar. Scar revision procedures can be performed in a surgeon's office-based facility, an outpatient surgery center or a hospital and most procedures involve some form or anesthesia.
Some degree of redness, bruising and swelling can occur after scar revision, and recovery will vary according to the exact procedure performed.
